Why does my DVD copy of the public domain Night of the Living Dead have copy protection on it?

Obama wins
I am very thankful that McCain did not win this election. I don't think the world, let alone the country, could take another four years of the path we've been heading down. I don't think the world could take someone so easily swayed to the path of mudslinging and fear tactics. That said, I do not let go of my fear for things because Obama won. I am still afraid for the people he will continue to war against. I am still sad for people who choose to love someone of the same sex, but are denied their right to marry. I am still angry that I'm forced to pay for the criminalization of drug users. We are still subject to the DMCA, the Patriot Act, and every other measure instituted to ensure the destruction of the Constitution.
I do not believe we will see change. I do not believe this is a time of hope. The only thing I believe is that the next four years will be better than the last eight.

Do not install boost to /usr on OSX
And the verdict is... gcc puts implicit extern "C" {} around headers included by C++ objects, from /usr/include to fix up misbehaving standard headers. So the proper place for boost headers is somewhere that is not /usr/include. Good to know.

The blood of innocents?
I know that if I had been killed in a terrorist attack, I would want the blood stained metal from the building I was in to be used in building a ship that would be used to bring death to impoverished nations around world.
In other news, the war is going fine and our economy is as strong as ever. Buy Nike and remember to pay your taxes.

Georgia
I can't tell who I'm supposed to hate here. I've read that the Ossetians want to break away from Georgia. I've read that the Georgians are trying to keep the Russians from taking their country through Ossetia. I've read that Ossetia is a part of Russia and that it's a part of Georgia. I've read that Russia is involving itself because they want to take back oil routes. I've read that the US is supporting Georgia and I've read that the US is doing nothing. I've read that Putin wants to reclaim the Soviet Union and I've read that the Russians were the first to offer a cease fire, which was ignored by the Georgians. I've read that the Georgians put down the first offer of a cease fire and didn't honor it. I've read that the US is using the event to distract from advances on attacking Iran.
I don't know who or what to believe anymore.

Motorcycle finally effing works
Yeah it sorta works. It doesn't bleed oil like a sumbitch anymore basically. My jets aren't big enough tho, which is a bitch because I don't know where I'm gonna get some big enough ones. But when I get them, holy shit. It's gonna sound like a bastard and get off the line like a banshee. Or something like that.
And I passed the STAR class so I'll get my license all brand newed up in a couple weeks when I get the certificate. I'll be all legal and shit. Hell yeah.

Friggin Hackjob Mechanics
Old oil filter bolt is rounded, new oil filter bolt is too long. What the fuck. Is the cover too small? The bolt is the right bolt, so it has to be the cover, right? Some jackass replaced both the bolt and the cover with the wrong god damn parts. No wonder the missing spacer didn't appear to be actually missing when I took it apart... there isn't any room for the stupid thing with this setup. Who does this kinda half assed shittery???

Debugging Python
Been looking for this for a while and it was under my nose the entire time.
Oh oh, also, I got a motorcycle. 1980 Honda CB650 Custom. Needs some work but it's a pretty sweet ride.

The thing about digital media
People who are willing to pay for something they enjoy, even when they don't *have* to, generally will on principle. People who are *not* willing to pay for something they enjoy are *not* going to pay for it no matter how difficult you make it to steal. The *only* thing that DRM does is turn away those would would have been otherwise happy to pay for the product.
In short, those who plan to steal your creation are not your target market. Stop wasting money trying to force them into being a part of it. Instead, take that money and find new and inviting ways to give back to those of us who *are* a part of your target market.

Let's Ride
Gonna try and get in to get my motorcycle learning permit tomorrow. Why not just go for the whole thing? Cuz I lack the skills to pay the bills man, that's why. Gonna see about a set of assless chaps, a spiked helmet, a mustache, and chin largification surgery to go with it. Fuck yeah I'm the shit.
Update 1: Shouldn't have gotten my hopes up. Line was too long for me to get in and out without taking time off work. I'll head in earlier on Monday to get at the front of that government induced nightmare.

Hey thanks CableOne
I appreciate you guys blocking port 25 so I can't setup a mail server without routing through you first. It's awesome that I pay you a fucking shit ton of money so that *you* can decide what I'm allowed to do with the service. Fucking assholes.
Also, you jackass spammers that are the *reason* things are this way, fuck you. I hope a large rock falls on you. Every last one of you.
p.s. WE'LL DO IT LIVE! FUCKING THING SUCKS! God bless you bill o'reilly. You are my example of how a man should compose himself.

Foxboro Hot Tubs
It's good to see that even under a different name, the guys from Green Day still can't seem to make any worthwhile contribution to the world's library of music. I said it earlier today and I'm saying it again, these guys are nothing but a marketing tool for getting post punk into the hands of women. They're the pusher's free sample of the gateway drug to the world of horribly repetitive music.

The Poverty of Philosophy - Immortal Technique
Most of my Latino and black people who are struggling to get food, clothes and shelter in the hood are so concerned with that, that philosophising about freedom and socialist democracy is usually unfortunately beyond their rationale. They don't realize that America can't exist without separating them from their identity, because if we had some sense of who we really are, there's no way in hell we'd allow this country to push it's genocidal consensus on our homelands. This ignorance exists, but it can be destroyed.
Nigga talk about change and working within the system to achieve that. The problem with always being a conformist is that when you try to change the system from within, it's not you who changes the system; it's the system that will eventually change you. There is usually nothing wrong with compromise in a situation, but compromising yourself in a situation is another story completely, and I have seen this happen long enough in the few years that I've been alive to know that it's a serious problem. Latino America is a huge colony of countries whose presidents are cowards in the face of economic imperialism. You see, third world countries are rich places, abundant in resources, and many of these countries have the capacity to feed their starving people and the children we always see digging for food in trash on commercials. But plutocracies, in other words a government run by the rich such as this one and traditionally oppressive European states, force the third world into buying overpriced, unnecessary goods while exporting huge portions of their natural resources.
I'm quite sure that people will look upon my attitude and sentiments and look for hypocrisy and hatred in my words. My revolution is born out of love for my people, not hatred for others.
You see, most of Latinos are here because of the great inflation that was caused by American companies in Latin America. Aside from that, many are seeking a life away from the puppet democracies that were funded by the United States; places like El Salvador, Guatemala, Peru, Columbia, Nicaragua, Ecuador and Republica Dominicana, and not just Spanish-speaking countries either, but Haiti and Jamaica as well.
As different as we have been taught to look at each other by colonial society, we are in the same struggle and until we realize that, we'll be fighting for scraps from the table of a system that has kept us subservient instead of being self-determined. And that's why we have no control over when the embargo will stop in Cuba, or when the bombs will stop dropping in Vieques.
But you see, here in America the attitude that is fed to us is that outside of America there live lesser people. "Fuck them, let them fend for themselves." No, Fuck you, they are you. No matter how much you want to dye your hair blonde and put fake eyes in, or follow an anorexic standard of beauty, or no matter how many diamonds you buy from people who exploit your own brutally to get them, no matter what kind of car you drive or what kind of fancy clothes you put on, you will never be them. They're always gonna look at you as nothing but a little monkey. I'd rather be proud of what I am, rather than desperately trying to be something I'm really not, just to fit in. And whether we want to accept it or not, that's what this culture or lack of culture is feeding us.
I want a better life for my family and for my children, but it doesn't have to be at the expense of millions of lives in my homeland. We're given the idea that if we didn't have these people to exploit then America wouldn't be rich enough to let us have these little petty material things in our lives and basic standards of living. No, that's wrong. It's the business giants and the government officials who make all the real money. We have whatever they kick down to us. My enemy is not the average white man, it's not the kid down the block or the kids I see on the street; my enemy is the white man I don't see: the people in the white house, the corporate monopoly owners, fake liberal politicians those are my enemies. The generals of the armies that are mostly conservatives those are the real Mother-Fuckers that I need to bring it to, not the poor, broke country-ass soldier that's too stupid to know shit about the way things are set up.
In fact, I have more in common with most working and middle-class white people than I do with most rich black and Latino people. As much as racism bleeds America, we need to understand that classism is the real issue. Many of us are in the same boat and it's sinking, while these bougie Mother-Fuckers ride on a luxury liner, and as long as we keep fighting over kicking people out of the little boat we're all in, we're gonna miss an opportunity to gain a better standard of living as a whole.
In other words, I don't want to escape the plantation I want to come back, free all my people, hang the Mother-Fucker that kept me there and burn the house to the god damn ground. I want to take over the encomienda and give it back to the people who work the land.
You cannot change the past but you can make the future, and anyone who tells you different is a Fucking lethargic devil. I don't look at a few token Latinos and black people in the public eye as some type of achievement for my people as a whole. Most of those successful individuals are sell-outs and house Negros.
But, I don't consider brothers a sell-out if they move out of the ghetto. Poverty has nothing to do with our people. It's not in our culture to be poor. That's only been the last 500 years of our history; look at the last 2000 years of our existence and what we brought to the world in terms of science, mathematics, agriculture and forms of government. You know the idea of a confederation of provinces where one federal government controls the states? The Europeans who came to this country stole that idea from the Iroquois lead. The idea of impeaching a ruler comes from an Aztec tradition. That's why Montezuma was stoned to death by his own people 'cause he represented the agenda of white Spaniards once he was captured, not the Aztec people who would become Mexicans.
So in conclusion, I'm not gonna vote for anybody just 'cause they black or Latino they have to truly represent the community and represent what's good for all of us proletariat.
Viva la revolution!

Who is this guy?
Please tell me someone from Boise is reading this and knows this guy. What an epic mustache.
If I were half as smart as this...
"The Internet - it is a kind of place."

I know I'm a nerd
I've seen a lot of articles on Digg lately about the massive amounts of douchebag Guidos on the intertubes and it got me to thinking. I'm a nerd, I fully accept this. It's part of my persona. I have no delusions about being cool or hip or whatever the kids are calling it today. I know I'm a nerd. So obviously these guys must know they're douchebags? Right?

Python notes for myself
filter = [x for x in S if P(x)]
map = [F(x) for x in S]
reduce(+, L) = sum(L)
reduce(&&, L) = all(L)
reduce(||, L) = any(L)
reduce(*, L) = nothing yet :(
reduce() goes away in Python 3000, but the others remain, although list comprehension is generally faster than the inevitable lambda that gets used in filter/map/reduce.
And now back to your regularly scheduled blogging.

New layout or whatever
Finally got around to updating the layout of this thing. Looks as retarded as ever, but now the archive links don't stretch down to the center of the Earth. Also updated some links over on the right there and included a link to a new joint blog in which a few people complain about things we don't really know anything about but feel entitled to opine on.

Shane discovers QoS
So I put Tomato on my router a few weekends ago. Today I decided to hit up a couple large bittorrents and naturally I watched my network slow to a crawl. My logs are filling up with invalid packets that I can't explain, and this is after fixing all of the packets that were being dropped by my shit firewall settings.
Sooo, I thought it would be fun to see if I can fix things to let me surf the net while hammering shit with downloads. 30 minutes later, I've got 2 torrents going at around 40-50KB/s up and down (total between the 2 torrents, which seems kinda slow but I haven't been able to get it going any faster) and I can surf the net hassle free.
Pretty happy overall with the network these days. I've got rsync backups going, TV recordings, a re-worked website, lots of crap moved into svn, and somewhere around here is a partridge in some sort of fruit tree. Good stuff all around.

god hates fags
From a conversation I just had:
(09:30:25 AM) podshane: God hates. Fuck that. I'd rather spend eternity in hell then give myself to something so spiteful and cruel.
RIP Heath.

DVR update (again)
After a few nights of work, this is where we stand. Right now I have a system that boots up and auto-logs in to an XFCE desktop. I can use my remote to start/stop the screensaver, open/close the DVD tray, play and control a DVD through xine, and shutdown/reboot the system.
So it's not totally complete or overly fancy or anything, but I'm pretty damn impressed with it. I've had to recompile a few things and dig a bit into how some of this stuff works. It's been pretty interesting to learn about. I think it's made for a fun project and that's basically what the point has been. Not so much getting a working DVD/DVR machine, but more just dicking around with cool software and cool hardware.
Tomorrow night is my night for getting mythtv setup and configured. My commitment moment will be signing up for the $20/year Schedules Direct TV listing data. When I've done that, I don't see any chance for turning back. I'm hoping it doesn't take too long to figure out, but we'll see. I'm also getting kind of worried about the amount of heat this thing generates. In order to fit my PVR-500 in there, I had to jack the blower from the CPU. That means all of the heat from the CPU is mixing with the heat from the capture card and the HDD and the DVD-RW and whatever else in there is contributing to the heat death of the universe. I need to try dremeling out the blower and putting it back in to see if it helps a bit. If not... well... who knows. Best make sure I back up everything I'd need to rebuild, just in case.
In non-DVR news, I got my official Athene DVD and it was as funny as I thought it'd be. It made for a fun test of the new remote functionality. I'm also considering catching Cloverfield tomorrow. I dunno if that will happen, but I'm stoked to see it on the big screen. It'd cut into my mythtv time a bit (it's a short movie), but it may just be worth it.

DVR update
Finally got all the hardware in for my dvr. Been putting it together for the last few days and finally am at the point of being able to use VLC to watch DVDs. Which makes it a very fucking expensive DVD player right now that I can also use to surf and watch porn on my TV. Yay.
The TODO list as of now is as follows:
1) Install MythTV
2) Setup remote
Step 1 is obviously glossing over a shit ton of work, but once it's done I should be able to stop using VLC for playing DVDs (can't read the fucking menus with that thing) and can get rid of my shit ass DVR from the cable company.
As I'm typing this, I've come across a potential #3. Figure out why, when watching a DVD, the audio cuts out every so often.

Lily Allen
Someone double check this shit for me. This chick can actually sing good, right? My judgment here feels extremely clouded. It's gotta be the accent man. It's gotta be.
Funny story, Hillary Clinton is on cspan right now... so I'm surfing random clips of Megan Fox on YouTube. Strange how that sort of sums up this year's election. I hate to say I'm falling for Ron Paul, but I'd be lying if he didn't come in as a close second to Mike Gravel. It's such a shame the media is doing everything they can to keep both of them out of the race while feeding us people like Clinton, Obama, and Huckabee. It's pretty sick, really.
